McGowan's Heating & Air Conditioning provides a full range of cooling services in Jacksonville and throughout the surrounding areas. Over our more than 40 years of service, we have often had customers ask us about strange noises coming from their AC units. Let’s take a closer look.

Noise From Outside Units

If you have an outside unit such as a heat pump, some noise should be expected. In fact, your heat pump will sound different in winter than it does in summer due to the reverse flow of refrigerant. However, you will get to know your unit over time, and if the noise is unusual, call a technician right away.

Metal on Metal

This is one of the most troublesome sounds you can hear because the fan blades could be hitting something. If left unchecked, it could cause permanent damage. Shut the air conditioning off and schedule emergency service from a trusted provider.

Vibration

Vibration-related noises can be tricky to diagnose, and they can worsen over time. Often, it is possible to dampen that vibration with additional insulation or better support. With outside units, some vibration is unavoidable and may not be possible to correct.

Buzzing

Some buzzing from an outside unit occurs due to the solenoid, and it’s to be expected. However, if the buzzing is getting louder and becoming persistent, this is a sign of a problem. The issue could be as simple as an air filter needing replacement or as serious as the blower going bad or being out of balance.

Clicking

When it comes to electrical components, some clicking is to be expected. This is another scenario in which you have to be familiar with your system to know if a sound is unusual. However, if the clicking is ongoing, that is not normal. It may indicate a failing thermostat or a more serious electrical issue.
