Air conditioners, furnaces, and other heating and cooling system components are expensive pieces of equipment. Nearly all HVAC manufacturers offer at least a basic five-year warranty that covers malfunctions and failures due to a flawed component. Many HVAC manufacturers also offer extended warranties or service contracts at an additional cost, which can help defray the considerable cost of other types of repairs.

Warranty Term

“Warranty term” refers to the duration of the protection the manufacturer is offering you. Terms vary depending upon the manufacturer, but one of the more popular warranty terms is 10 years. Most HVAC system components are engineered to last between 15 and 20 years, so a 10-year warranty will cover a significant portion of your equipment’s expected service life. Some manufacturers will offer different terms for different components in the same warranty.

Voiding a Warranty

Most HVAC manufacturers require you to register your equipment before you are covered through their warranties. In some instances, this registration will be part of the service the installation technician performs while in others it will not. Always read the warranty fine print carefully to see which of these circumstances applies to you.

Most HVAC warranties will also be voided if you fail to use a licensed contractor to install your equipment, use replacement parts that are not on the manufacturer’s approved list, don’t have routine maintenance and upkeep on your HVAC system, or fail to keep maintenance records.

Equipment Warranties Versus Labor Warranties

With an HVAC repair, you’re facing two types of costs: equipment and labor. Labor warranties are provided by the HVAC contractor you’re working with rather than by the HVAC equipment manufacturer. Labor warranties specifically cover mistakes made during the repair, service maintenance or installation process that may affect an HVAC component’s performance.
