Noise is typically a part of our everyday lives. What you usually hear is filtered out as background noise, but any other noise will likely grab your attention. Thanks to technology, modern HVAC units are now much quieter than older models. They have sound-dampening technology and improved parts to keep the sound levels low. So, if you hear your outside AC unit making noise as you walk past, it’s likely a sign of a malfunction requiring professional attention.
McGowan’s Heating & Air Conditioning offers AC maintenance services to ensure your unit runs seamlessly throughout every season. Keep reading to learn more about different AC noises and what they mean.
Humming Noises
Normally, an AC motor produces soft humming sounds. However, when the sounds become louder, it is cause for concern. Your AC may be humming considerably louder because:
- Low Levels of Lubrication: A motor in need of lubrication will make a humming sound, which, if left unsolved, eventually turns into a loud grinding noise. If you’ve done it before, you may lubricate the motor, but it’s best left to the professionals.
- Bent fin coils: If your fin coils are bent, they will make a humming noise. The issue can be fixed by using a metal comb to straighten the bent coil fins. You must consider regular HVAC maintenance to keep your coil fins in shape to avoid this.
- Contractor failure: The contractor controls the flow of electricity to your AC. It connects the AC to the power supply. If your contractor is failing, your AC will make humming noises and eventually, if left unsolved, will turn into a loud buzzing sound.
Popping Noises
A popping sound may often sound like making popcorn and indicates that your AC has a problem that shouldn’t be ignored. As soon as you notice this issue, turn off your AC. Normally, the sound could signify the compressor is malfunctioning.
The sound is produced when the compressor absorbs refrigerant in liquid form instead of vapor. If ignored, the problem eventually damages the compressor. So, it’s important to turn off the unit when you hear your outside AC unit making a distinct noise and call an AC repair tech.
Buzzing Noises
Your AC may be making buzzing noises because:
- The compressor is malfunctioning: The sound is produced when the compressor is still receiving power but not running. In such cases, the compressor needs to be replaced.
- Loose parts: If your AC has loose parts, you will hear a buzzing sound as they vibrate when the unit is running. These parts need to be tightened by a professional AC repair person.
- The capacitor has broken down: A capacitor that isn’t working can prevent a fan from turning on, resulting in a buzzing sound due to friction. An AC repair tech can check out the unit and let you know if the capacitor needs to be repaired or replaced.
- Faulty motor: A faulty motor or obstructions near the motor’s copper line can make a buzzing sound. The lines should be kept well insulated and reduce metal-on-metal contact.
- Loose wires: Exposed or loose wires may also be the culprit of a buzzing noise. Once you notice the sound, it’s advisable to turn off the AC to avoid creating an electric spark.
Don’t Ignore Any Noises Coming From Your AC Unit.
When your outside AC unit starts making noise, it’s a sign that there’s a problem that needs professional attention. Neglecting these noises often leads to further detriment of your AC’s health, leading to more costly repairs in the future.
